Skin Ellipse: Basal Cell Carcinoma
The specimen is received in formalin labeled “basal cell carcinoma left nose–suture superior” and consists of an oriented 1.2 x 0.5 cm elliptical segment of tan-white skin excised to a depth of 0.2 cm. There is a suture along the superior aspect of the specimen subsequently designated as 12 o’clock. The skin surface displays a 0.2 x 0.2 x 0.1 cm central tan-yellow nodular lesion. The 3 o’clock half of the deep margin is inked in black and the 9 o’clock half is inked in orange. The specimen is serially sectioned from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock to reveal a tan-white cut surface with the previously described lesion seemingly confined to the superficial surface.
The specimen is entirely submitted A1-A3 as follows:
A1: 12:00 Tip
A2: 6:00 Tip
A3: Central cross-sections
